Induction hardeningInduction hardening is a metal treatment that hardens the surface of steel material by using high-frequency induction current to rapidly heat and cool the surface. The mechanism of hardening by high-frequency hardening includes: running current to a metal object that is wrapped in copper coil creates magnetism within the coil due to electromagnetic induction while eddy current occurs within the metal object. This eddy current is concentrated only on the metal surface due to skin effect, meaning the current is running on the metal surface. When current occurs, heat occurs due to the electric resistivity of the metal that is hardened by induction heating. The heat is used to heat the metal surface until it becomes austenite-like condition before rapidly cooling it down. Due to this treatment, the metal surface hardens while the original characteristics and hardness of the material remains inside. |
